[pct-l] Fuel Info stuff

First Alcohol is becoming common at most trail towns these days as the word
is out that most thru-hikers now use the stuff and should be easy to find .
Next , if you take a whisper light or other white gas stove , use coleman
fuel if possible. It is much cleaner and has anti-corrosion mix in it. The "
Biggy" though is that Coleman fuel is only about 82 octane, which makes it
good for stoves and maybe old Volkswagons! ( I used Coleman fuel in my
lawnmower last summer and it ran at about half-thottle) If you must use
unleaded gas, be sure to use the lowest octane you can find!!!! ( If you use
unleaded in your old Svea , Primus or Optimus , bring an armload of extra
safety fuel caps as the higher octane makes self-pressurized stoves burn like
someone putting nitro in the family super-cruiser. The higher octane will
shorten jet life and additives clog fuel wicks and fuel tubes. I have used
unleaded in my old Optimus 8R for a lone thru-hike and it works, but go for
low octane. Also, the carb cleaner trick is great for old stoves and cleaning
the varnish out of tanks and unleaded residue. ( I have also heard of MSR
stoves exploding with unleaded fuel ,but have not witnessed such)
