[pct-l] Hitchhking from Whitney Portal

I remember ending a trip on the Muir Trail at Whitney Portal.  It was August
and in the middle of the week.  I sat for three hours while "tourists"
accelerated by me, avoiding my eyes.

I was finally picked up by a German family curious about what I was doing.
I got in the car, smelled myself and apologized.  They laughed at how
concerned we Americans are with cleanliness.  They were in awe of a 200 mile
hike.  A nice way to re-enter civilization.  Hero worship and dirt
acceptance...
