[pct-l] Grease Pot Handle

Paul, when you refer to a "Wal-Mart grease pot" do you mean a Mirro
spun-aluminum pot/saucepan? This response doesn't exactly answer your
question about attaching a wire bale without drilling holes in the pan, but
I thought I'd share our experience with an aluminum Mirro saucepan (typical
drugstore/hardware store model):

We've used the bottom part of a cheap 1-quart aluminum Mirro double-boiler
pan, with the lid and handle that comes with the pan(seems to me the price
was about $8.00), for several years. This one has a plastic handle that's
attached to the pot by a single screw. We remove the handle for packing the
pot - the handle, stove, lighter, etc all fit inside the pot. Attaching the
handle takes less than a minute.

After having been scalded by boiling water spilled from a pot with a hot
wire bale my husband's been very happy with a secure, inflexible handle.
This isn't a necessarily a concern if you're careful with the wire bale.

As we don't use the pot for anything other than boiling water we don't
worry about the thinness of the pot or any aluminum getting into
acid-containing food.

I can provide the actual weight of the combination if you're interested -
I'm just being lazy about dragging the pot out of a crowded closet to weigh
it. But I think it's either lighter than or at most the same weight as a
titanium pot of the same volume.
