[pct-l] GPS
I have used a variety of the Garmin GPS receivers starting with the
venerable, but heavy (pack wise) GPS12. The newer e-Trex series is much
lighter (5.+ oz) and intuitive to use (by my own judgement). 500 waypoints
is pretty much a standard across the industry in rec GPS's. The Summit
doesn't have a base map but does include the altimeter and electronic
compass. The Vista has a base map (mostly roads and cities) as well as the
altimeter and electronic compass.
My experience is that you get what you pay for whether it is a Garmin,
Magellan, or whatever. Lots of choices and decisions, good luck!

I'm looking for a GPS receiver to use on the Arizona Trail this spring
(didn't need one on the PCT, but the AZT is a little more daunting
navigationwise). Light weight, durable, easy on batteries, able to download
and store lots of waypoints, not too expensive -- anyone have any models
they are especially happy or unhappy with, features you like, etc.
Happy trails, Tom
