In regards to the paint-can closure style bear can--after the can is
handled once at meal time you will odorize the exterior of the can with
food odors. This, of course, assumes you didn't odorize the can when
you packed it. I don't think the can will be odor-invisible to bears to
begin with and certainly won't be given back-packing levels of
cleanliness after it is opened in the field.
And haven't you gone out to the garage to get that partial can of paint
for touch up and found that the can is dried up? The paint can type of
compression closure is susceptable to damage. It is effective when in
perfect condition, but is easily compromised, as all those dried-up cans
of paint attest.
