[pct-l] Bear Boxes/Food Storage Information from NPS

So many people have responded asking me for the
information on bear box locations in the Sierra, that
I decided to just post it to the list. This a direct
quote from the "Sequoia and Kings Canyon National
Parks Backcountry Basics" published in 2002.

You have three options for food storage in the
backcountry. Failure to properly store food can
result in a fine of up to $5000.

Best Option: Portable Canister
Available for sale or rent at multiple locations in
the parks and Forest Service ranger station/visitor
centers. Allow for maximum freedom of camping
locations and ensures security of food.

2nd Choice: Food Storage Box
Guaranteed bearproof, but there are drawbacks:
depending on boxes limits your potential camping
areas, and many fill up. Box locations:

Charlotte Creek (1)
Junction Meadow (Lower) (1)

YOSEMITE
Bear boxes are only available at a limited number of
designated wilderness campsites next to the High
Sierra Camps and in Little Yosemite Valley. Note - In
an effort to limit human intrusions into wilderness as
designated in the 1964 congressional Wilderness Act,
bear boxes may be phased out of these locations in the future.
