Perhaps you are mistaking the Ansel Adams Wilderness (which is just south of
Yosemite and west of Mammoth) with the John Muir Wilderness (which includes
your description above).  This area (the JMW) is situated between the two
notorious bear problem areas of the AAW and the Kearsarge Pass - Bubbs Creek
areas.  In the Ansel Adams Wilderness area bear canisters are mandatory.  In
the John Muir Wilderness area , who knows?
