Hi Jim,

Well, I used an isobutane stove from Lone Pine onwards
on my thru-hike this year onwards this year and had no
problems (previously I used a white has stove).
Although you may not be able to get the fuel in that
many places along the way, there were plenty in hiker
boxes and there were a few towns where you could buy
the larger MSR ones, not the small Snow Peak
canisters.
Towns that I can remember being able to buy it were
Lone Pine, S.Lake Tahoe, Sisters. This list won't be
complete as I wasn't really looking for it all the
time !! However, it is possible to post them to
yourself. I am from the UK, so didn't have anyone to
post them out to me from the US. I bought 8 canisters
and packed them well, posted them along the way and
this worked fine. The only restrictions on posting are
that they have to be marked correctly 'Surface Mail
Only', 'Consumer commodity ORM-D', 'UN 1011'. I have a
Snow Peak titanium stove and had no problems with it
at all (make sure you have a good windshield) and I
much preferred it to a pepsi-can stove which I felt was far
too slow. A bit of information on the canisters. I
found that the 7 oz (110g) canisters lasted around 7-9
days, this is cooking pasta/rice by boiling the water
and simmering for a minute or so, then turning the
stove off and leaving to continue cooking.

Well, I hope this information is useful, if you have
any more questions, just email me.
