[pct-l] Southern California Weather & Forest Closures

All,

Two sobos (Dustin & Jonathan from North Carolina) made it to Agua Dulce on
October 11; they'd initiated their hike at Crater Lake in August. Together we
went to the Angeles National Forest office in Arcadia to plead their case of
being allowed to continue their hike to the officials running the forest (San
Gabriel Mountains). The official word was politely and sympathetically "NO!".
Here's what they said (essentially):

Typically the fire season ends around the end of November, however, the forest
will not re-open until the moisture content in the vegetation rises to an
acceptable level. As those who reside in this area know, one good Santa Ana
wind can dehydrate just about anything, so the benefits of a good rainfall can
be quickly lost. Some areas of the PCT will remain closed, perhaps until next
summer. Specifically, the section of the Trail near Little Jimmy Campground
will in all likelihood remain closed. This is due to the precariousness of
some large trees that suffered burns -- they do not know if the trees are
going to survive or topple, and only time will tell if these trees will
survive. In the interest of public safety, they'll keep that section closed.

Officials of the Angeles have taken the hardest line approach to this crisis
over other forest jurisdictions; they've lost 15% of the forest to fires this
year, all of which were started by people, not natural causes. Bankruptcy is
anticipated for businesses located in the Angeles NF.

I will follow-up with local forest officials in the coming weeks and months,
and try to get the information out there for y'all. Sadly, Dustin and
Jonathan had to end their hike and deploy Plan "B", returning to North
Carolina.
