Speaking of leash laws. Two different thru hikers were ticketed in Crater =
Lake NP this year and forced to walk the road, or accept a ride out of the =
park. One ticket was for about $50 the other at least twice that (their do=
g was not on leash).

I hiked there with my dog in 99 and we received nothing but encouragement. =
I met rangers in every NP and the only problem arose in Yosemite. I was m=
et by rangers, thanked for having my dog on leash, and told I could stay at=
the backpacker site. The next day a hiker came in with an unleashed dog w=
hich promptly ran barking and growling up to the head ranger. The dog's ow=
ner was told to leave immediately and the ranger came to find me and told m=
e, sorry, but you will not be allowed to continue through the park. He did=
let me stay another night in the backpacker campsite though.

The ONLY way to go.
Of course it DOES cost more than just telling everybody to do or not do
something and they would definitely have to amend the leash law.
