Mount Marion Fire Burning in Mt Jefferson Wilderness

A wildfire that started on August 14 is burning in the Mount Jefferson Wild=
erness near Marion Lake, a popular recreation area on the Willamette Nation=
al Forest. The fire grew rapidly to 50 acres yesterday afternoon, with hot=
weather and winds to 15 mph causing torching, short crowning runs and spot=
ting up to 1/4 mile.

The dense fuels, stands of bug-killed trees, heavy slash, erratic winds, ye=
llow jacket nests and limited safety zones are ongoing safety concerns for =
the firefighters.

The Willamette National Forest has issued an emergency closure to ensure pu=
blic safety during suppression activities. The following recreation areas a=
re included in the closure order:

-Eight Lakes Basin -Minto Pass Trail -Bowerman Trail
-Duffy Lake Trail -Pine Ridge Trail -Turpentine Trail
-Marion Lake Trail

d #2257, south of Markon Lake Trail, Minto Pass Trail and north of the Duff=
