Actually, for just going sheer distance, especially in heat, humans can outdo horses. In most of the "man vs horse" races the man wins. 

For going shorter distances quickly or carrying loads, (like those soldiers would be carrying) horses kick ass.

In the ultra running community, it is generally accepted that the only animal that can out distance a man is an elephant.
