[pct-l] Hitchhiking 102

Hola Compadres!

HikerRob gave some good advice to hitchhiking, but
left out some key tips I wouldn't mind sharing with
you.

First of all, SMILE and WAVE as if you were thanking
that person for even considering you as a potential.

Next...it's very important that you take your hat
(bandanas are questionable) and sunglasses off so the
driver can see your face. i know it's hot and bright
out there, but your chances are multiplied by 200% if
you are clear to them.

Next...find a spot that is very easy for them to pull
over, with plenty of "think about it" time.

signs are nearly mandatory. keep your eyes out for
cardboard others have left. make sure to get a piece
of carboard written for both to and fro (for other
hikers once you get back from town to the trail).
toss a phat rock over the sign and leave it for
another.

try to clean yourself up before a ride...it might just
get you a meal or free spot to stay.

pairs are good (especially if one is a hottie).
triplets are impossible.

my biggest trick is to wave a snickers or m&ms at the
drivers, dance, or get goofy. for some reason...it
works.

your chances ARE better on rural roads as opposed to
busy highways. those busy folks are either going to
fast or say "someone else will pick them up"

and most importantly, don't get frustrated when a
driver flies past you. you are a stranger that stinks
and is potentially dangerous. they do not have to
stop for you, so don't fret and cuss and kick the
dirt. it's bad karma.

rock on folks. see you at the kick off with a little
piece of gear that may be in the competition.

-Amigo
