[pct-l] Mt. Whitney

Presuming the weather is good, you should easily be able to get up to Guitar
Lakes and camp, if later in the day, and then go up and back the next
morning getting back early p.m. If you get up there early in the day, you
can go up and back and then camp at night. The trail is long, but relatively
gentle - maybe some snow just before the summit. I wouldn't go down to Lone
Pine and back up from there, but .... Watch out for the marmots. They are
over friendly. I would plan one extra day, but would allow for two if the
weather is not cooperating.

We went to Independence via Kearsage Pass and found that side trip to be one
of the most beautiful of the whole hike. The scenery is outstanding. I
wouldn't miss it. Just don't camp on the Independence side - you definitely
need canisters on the east side of the pass.

Bears will be in the valleys. In 2000, we didn't see any nor see signs of
any. At high altitudes, there isn't much for them to eat. But, having a
canister gives you the freedom to camp where you like.
