I like the grunt too, but if you don't want to retrace your steps up the 
Devils Slide Trail, you can walk past the campground 1/2 mile out of town and 
up the Marion Ridge Trail back to the PCT shortly before the Fuller Ridge 
Trail on your left.  You don't want to miss this turn otherwise you may be 
taking the tram afterall, as I nearly peaked San Jauncito before I realized I 
had lost the trail.

If you're into towns, Idyllwild is a good one.
