SECTION E: HIGH WAY 58 NEAR MOJAVE / TEHACHAPI TO AQUA DULCE 110 MILES
I
MY SON AND I GOT THE 8:10 GREYHOND BUS FROM SANTA ANA CA TO TEHACHAPI WITH A
CHANGE OF BUS IN MOJAVE. THE DRIVER OF THE ORANGE BUS LINE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO
LEAVE US OFF AT TEHACHAPI PASS. THIS SAVED US FROMHICHIKING ABOUT SEVEN
MILES. WE ARRIVED AT THE PASS AT THREE P.M. WE DID ABOUT EIGHT MILES
ARRIVEING AT OAK CREEK A NICE RUNNING STREAM. IT'S NEAR TEHACHAPI-WILLOW
SPRING ROAD. BUT BEWARE IT IS A CATTLE CROSSING. IT HAS A NICE CAMP SITE OPEN
TO THE PUBLIC WITH A PARK TABLE. "THIS IS A CHANGE IN THE GUIDE BOOK" THE
NEXT TWENTY-TWO MILES ARE WITHOUT WATER. WE FILLED UP WITH A GALLON EACH
USING OUR PUR FILTER AND IODINE TABLETS. ABOUT EIGHT MILES OUT THERE ARE
THREE TREES DOWN OVER THE TRAIL.
THE NEXT FEW DAYS ARE BEST DESCRIBED AS WHAT MAN CAN DO TO DESTROY NATURE.
THERE ARE. ACRES AND ACRES, MILE AFTER MILE OF WIND MILL FANS AS FAR AS THE
EYE CAN SEE. THEY ARE KNOW AS WINDMILL FARMS. THEY LOOK LIKE GAINT RECTOR
SETS OR SOMETHING FROM STAR WARS. I'M SURE THERE MUST BE A SPOTTED OWL OR A
TOAD MAYBE EVEN LONG TAILED FIELD MOUSE WE COULD FIND AND CLOSE THESE
MONSTERS DOWN. "YOU KNOW TO SAVE THE EARTH"
WE SLEPT THAT MIGHT AMONGST THE WINDMILL FAMS. THE NEXT DAY A STORM FROM THE
NORTH WITH GALES ABOUT 60 TO 7OMILES AN HOURE STARTED UP WHICH WOULD LAST FOR
THREE DAYS.
THAT MIGHT WE SLEPTED A FEW MILES SHORT OF TYERHOURSE CANYON. WE USED A CROP
OF TREES AND A ROCK FORMATION FOR PROTECTION FROM THE WINDS. THE NEXT NORNING
THE WINDS PICK BOTH MY SON AND I UP AND SPINNED US AROUND SEVERAL TIMES.
NOW THE GOOD NEWS THERE IS A NICE RUNNING CREEK AT TYERHOURSE CANYON.THE BAD
NEW. THE HORSE TROUGH WAS DRY AT COTTON WOOD CREEK. WE WERE ABLE TO SIPHON A
FEW QUARTS FROM A LEAK AT THE BASE OF A CONCRETE STRUCTURE NEXT TO HORSE
TROUGH.
THE BIGGEST EYE SORE IS THE GARBAGE THAT IS THROWN ALONG SIDE THE ACCESS ROAD
ALONG THE AQUADUCKS. I FEEL THAT LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND POWER
SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING AND MAINTANING THIS AREA. WHERE IS ERIN
DROCKOVICH?
THE WORSE ENVIORMENTAL PROBLEMS IS THE DIRT MOTOR BIKES ERODING TRAILS AND
HILL SIDES FOR MILES. ITS FUNNYTHE MOST PRISTINE AREA WAS TEJON RANCH ACCESS
WAY SOMETHING TO BE SAID ABOUT PRIVATE OWNED LANDS.
THE GUIDE BOOK MAKES A REFERENCE YOU CAN STAY AT JACK FAIR HOUSE AT ROUTE
138. I DID NOT KNOW JACK FAIR. JACK FAIR WAS A TRAIL ANGLE. HE MUST HAVE
SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF HIS MONEY TO MAKE IT HOSPITAL FOR PCT BACKPACKERS.
THERE IS A NICE BUNK HOUSE A LARGE WATER TANK. THE HOUSE IS UP FOR SELL JACK
IS NO LONGER WITH US. JACK REMORGATED HIS HOUSE AND WHAT I WAS TOLD HE WAS
HAVING A TOUGH TIME. JACK EITHER KILLED HEMSELF OR WAS MURDERED. SO SAY THE
TOWN PEOPLE. LETS TAKE OUR HATS OFF AS WE GO BY AND SAY A PRAYER FOR JACK.
FOR WATER AND FOOD WALK DOWN 138 SEVERAL MILES TO THE COUNTRY STORE THEY
HAVE A MICROWAVE OVEN WERE YOU COULD HEAT SOUP AND HAMBURGERS
WE SLEPT AT THE JACK'S BUNK HOUSE THE REALITOR CAME BY SEVERAL TIME BUT DID
NOT CHECK THE BUNK HOUSE. JACK WAS LOOKING OUT FOR US.
WE WENT UP LIEBER MOUNTAIN AND CAMPED AT BEAR CAMP GROUND NO WATER BUT A FIRE
RING. WE HAD SNOW AND TWENTY DEGREES THAT MIGHT. WE MET THE NEXT DAY A GROUP
FROM THE SIERRA CLUB WHO WERE HAVING A SAINT PADDY'S DAY PICNIC. THEY WARNED
US ABOUT A STORM COMING IN WITH HEAVY RAIN AND SNOW. WE DECIDED TO JUMP OF
THE TRAIL AFTER A COUPLE OF GOOD IRISH DRINKS. WE ENDED UP AT THE ROCK BAR
AT LAKE HUGH'S. A GOOD WATER TROUGH. THE LOCAL LAW WARNED US NOT TO HITCH
HIKE.
GOOD MIGHT
