The beauty of Mt. Whitney is worth it! Especially at sunrise from Iceberg Lake. But if you really can't stand the permit system, go up the mountaineer's route, no permit needed if you do it as a day hike. Just before Upper Boy Scout Lake, go left for Mt. Whitney or go right for Mt. Russell. Vic
