One more reason I forgot to add in favor of nylon long pants and long
sleeve shirts in the High Sierra--sun exposure.  We are both fair
skinned people and he has already had some skin cancer episodes.  So we
consider the long sleeves and long pants essential to lessen the sun
exposure.  Also, I got such severe sunburn on my face in 1999 that I
went back to work in September with scabs on my face that took weeks to
heal.  In 2000 I discovered a Nutrogena stick sunscreen for the face. 
"Crayoned" it all over my face and neck each morning and got no burn at
all.  Never go out without it now.  I didn't like applying suntan lotion
to my face with perma-grimy hands so the stick did the trick.
