[pct-l] Whippet is a 80's Devo Song

  There was talk a few years ago on this list of the Whippet. The term goes 
back to the early 80's and a " Devo Song" of how good they work. ( Remember , 
Whippet Good, when a problem comes along , you can Whippet and as long as you 
are strong, you can Whippet!!!)    Actually there was a fair number of 
complains about the whippet and a few ' Failure" stories though none 
relateing to lose of life. With all the great light ice axes out there, a 
would take a light ( 16oz.) model and my poles and rotate as needed. Also 
carry a pair of Stubi untralight crampons at 20 ozs. which are made to work 
with running shoes. ( 125.00 from ABC Mountaineering) You may have soft snow 
and no trouble, BUT in may freeze all day . I took heavy crampons thru in May 
77 and loved them!!! I was like spider man up and down all passes. Of course 
no one ever accused me of being all that bright, but I had fun.    Don use to 
play backup for the Grateful Dead and will do fine no matter if he takes an 
ice axe or Whippet or pitch fork.
