[pct-l] One more ice axe submittal

Take a hiking pole, with or without a whippet, open it up to the length =
you would use on the trail, and find a way to support the two ends =
horizontally high enough above the ground to allow you to do chin-ups =
from the middle of it. Now do the same with an ice axe. Which one folds =
in half? (Apologies to anyone who saw me present this argument on =
Troubadour's PCT Hiker's website.)

But as many have previously stated here, you have to learn how to use =
the ice axe.

I also crossed Forester Pass in 1977, but it was on July 3. The snow on =
going up the north side was fatiguing, but by no means dangerous. I =
remember only short stretches of icy snow on the south side, that were =
really no more than a nuisance. But I remember thinking that it could be =
a really scary place with more snow. A month can make one hell of a big =
difference.

Don has apparently been over these passes before, and seems to know what =
he is doing. But for the people who have NOT been over these passes =
before, if you are doing a northbound thruhike this year, learn how to =
use an ice axe and BRING it!!!
