[pct-l] PCT 2002 Questions-Some answers

Mike,
I'm thru-hiking the PCT this year too. Pretty exciting..

Transportation: You should be able to get a ride. I can't provide it, but the
list will come through. If it doesn't, there is bus service to Campo. The
archives of the list should have info.

De-natured alcohol: I know Vermillion Valley Resort at Lake Edison, in the
middle of the longest roadless area, had gas line antifreeze last summer. I
suspect the big gas station in Independence has it, and my impression (and
memory) is that Lone Pine is bigger, and therefore more likely to have it.
I have not yet figured out my volume for fuel. I know I could boil enough water
with about 2/3rds a film canister of alcohol. I'll do the measuring and then
do the math at some point. With fuel, I always like to error on the side of
taking too much.
I shipped sealed bottles of HEET last summer via USPS ground, and it came
through fine. Does anybody know if USPS shipping regulations have changed
since September 11th with regard to flamable stuff?
Word seems to be that plastic soda bottles are fine for alcohol storage.
That's what I'm doing. Alcohol is less volitle than white gas. The aluminum
is necessary for white gas stoves because of the pressure needed.

Water: My thinking is that lots of people every year solve the water problem,
so can I. I know I'm not going to die of dehydration. I might have to go off
trail and be delayed. I'm not planning on that though... I'm planning on
having capacity for 8 or 10 liters. Everybody: does that sound like enough for
a 20-mile (plus, if necessary) hiker?
I think the longest stretch of trail without natural water sources is 26 miles.
Ray Jardine in _Beyond Backpacking_ describes a stratgey to carry as little
water as possible that involves timing. More info upon request...
I would see Trail Angel stashes as 'extra' water. I'd hate to be planning on
it and find it not there.

If you want to chat more, drop me a line off-list.
