As unpleasant as Cattle polluted water is, herbivores such as cows and 
horses don't carry Giardia.

When the Giardia paranoia started, some large animal vets were worried 
about problems it might cause in their animals, and looked for infections 
in their livestock, and found none.

On the other hand, omnivores like rats, dogs and man, carry it quite 
nicely, thought each does seem to have its own preferred sub species of the 
bug.
