[pct-l] Re: [cdt-l] GPS, Walkie-talkie

Joanne -
We'll just add our two cents to Jonathans bucket - we didn't use GPS. We had
a partner who did - he spent more time with it than we spent with the map
and compass. Did we get "lost"? Yep - sorta. Both with the GPS and
without it. So what. We were hiking North to South. So in general, as
long as we were headed south, how lost could we be? Don't answer that :-))

I'm not gonna tell you to not take it. We're REALLY good with maps - I
literally cut my teeth on nautical navigational charts cause my father was a
ships Master. Ginny's just naturally good. Some people are, some aren't -
just be honest with yourself about which side you fall on. For some people
that alone should answer the question - but only you can make that
determination. If you're not really good - then go get a GPS. Unless, of
course, you want the challenge. That was one of the reasons we didn't carry
one. Both Ginny's boss and father actually offered to buy her one before we
left - they wanted her to come back
:-)))

Can't tell you about cell phones. Walkie talkies are generally short range
- a couple miles or so. But a lot of the country is really open so the
range may be extended.

Good luck,
Jim
