[pct-l] GPS, Walkie-talkie

GPS: If you think you need one, get the lightest one
possible, as you're more likely to take it with you. I
agree you don't usually need it on the PCT. Almost all
are now 12 channel parallel receivers, which is good.
Some older models aren't, and take a long time to get
good readings.

Radio: Unless you can see each other, the popular FRS
radios are useless after a mile or so. I would suggest
getting an amateur radio license and carrying a small
2-meter ham radio. My Yaesu VX-5 with a second battery
and a good antenna is about 10 ounces and has 5 watts.
Repeaters can extend your range to 100 miles and make
it possible to talk to someone from almost any high
point, and many low ones as well, even Rae Lakes.
Crest Rider was planning on taking one on her PCT ride
last year.

For more info on ham repeaters on the PCT see my
website at www.qsl.net/aa6j/pct . I would think the
CDT would be fairly well covered as well.
