I have been looking at OR's Hydroseal Cell Blocks in
the Campmore catalog (p188 of Gift 2001). ... you
could "build up" a very versatile lightweight modular
pack
using these and some kind of a frame (first got the
idea from Brawny's system on their web site)."
I hunted and found my Racer-X for $100. I have had
this same concept in my head since I set out on the AT
in '98 and even talked to Dana Gleason about it....not
saying he took my idea, but not much later this
Racer-X came out, more intended for trail runners I
think. Anyhow, I have researched and planned and even
designed a simple frame concept where you lash on
stuff sacks, including a 100% mesh concept. However,
for the price of materials, and for the expertise that
a professional company can provide in workmanship,
durability and fit, I have to say that building one
from scratch would probably cost near $50, which is
half the price of this Dana. I'm willing to pay an
extra $50 to get their quality and durability, because
everything I've ever made myself looked wonderful at
home, but didn't hold up to thousands of miles. Not
to mention that I can't get my weight down this low
with homemade gear that is light.
I'm curious what the OR rectangular sacks weigh.
Just my two cents.
