[pct-l] Frostbite question
When fingertip nerves get damaged from frostbite, do they regenerate, or is
this a permanent condition?
Background: Two months ago, I climbed my first 14er in Colorado, Castle
Peak. Like a fool, I failed to take gloves. When a snow storm that included
lightning blew in, my partner and I took the direct route down, a multiple
part glissade covering about 2,000 vertical feet. This was both one of the
scariest, but definitely THE most exhilarating experience I've had! And no,
I didn't use an ice axe. I used my feet for speed control and my hands for
stability. Except for numb and bloody hands, I had a blast. Since the
duration of the frostbite was short and included no discoloration, I figured
the numbness would be gone by now, but two months later, I still have minor
numbness in all ten fingers. Comments?
BTW, even if it is permanent, no regrets. I wouldn't trade that experience
for anything! :)
Thanks.
Happy trails,
Solar Bear
