This is getting idiotic! the average person couldn't stop a determined bear
with a 44 magnum. Attacking a bear with a slingshot is just as likely to
train bears to attack humans as it is to train bears to avoid humans. After
reading what bears do to cars, one should draw the conclusion that a human
is no match for a bear and provoking an intentional human/bear confrontation
wins a Darwin Award. { I am sorry if this ruins your Rambo/Davey Crocket

It is humans that need to be re-educated. The bear problem was not caused by
the NPS of the USFS. It was caused by stupid humans who allowed bears to get
their food.

We may not like it because bear canisters are heavy, expensive and a pain to
pack and carry but requiring bear canisters seems to be solving the bear
problem in the back country. Essentially they are now required from
Forrester Pass to Sonora Pass and at every east side lateral between Mt
Whitney and Highway 108. Still, stupid humans are still feading bears with
their canister overflow so bears are still sniffing around campsites.

Solving the bear problem is very simple. Hand out a $10,000 fine or a year
in the slammer to anyone improperly storing food and see how fast the
problem goes away.

 Cabela"s sells wrist rockets on page 466. ( Also steelies in several sizes)

Works well keeping deer out of Orchard and Garden's. Or neighbor's cat or
dog 
out of your flower beds or yard. After reading about the bear's damage at 
Whitney Portal portal, it is very apparent that this " Dr. Spock" appoach to

baby sitting the bear Sierra bear population isn't working . I would love to

see a few " take one for the team" . Bear's are fairly smart creatures and 
having a few of their buddies " bite it"  would go a long way to their re- 
education!!
