The Ranger simply said that the Ursack Ultra had some failures and was no
longer approved.
Seriously all, today I loaded my 1# 10oz wild-ideas canister with four full
days of food for two without trying. I could have easily squeezed in six
full days. By carrying the first day/night outside the canister I could hike
7 overnights with my wife and eaten like a king. My larger wild-ideas
canister is 33% larger so make that can capable of 9 overnights yet it
weighs only 2# 3oz. Given the problems with the Ursack and the fact that a
doubled URSACK Major would weigh 13 ounces, I have decided not to bother.
With my custom-made ADZPCTKO pack [2 pounds with internal frame and hip
belt] modified to carry the bear canister high on my shoulders lashed to the
frame and not resting on the rest of the load, my 33 pound load felt like
20. I couldn't carry an URSACK this way.
Strider tried this pack fully loaded with 11 pounds of food [20 pound base
weight, 2 pound canister]. Ask him.
