You did not mention if you had any previous experience hiking in a climate such as So. Cal. during August; it will still be EXTREMELY warm (hot) during the day.  Nights tend to drop quite a bit, and get very chilly.  Water is yet another thing to keep in mind, that late in the season there is virtually no free flowing springs left.  Not to dissuade you, it is still beautiful down here then.  Should you need a ride from the station out to the PCT I am sure that one of us out here would be more than happy to oblige.  Best wishes!
