[pct-l] Jack Fair

We were saddened to hear of Jack Fair's passing also.
Like Marge said...he was indeed a part of the trail.
He's also in our journals. When we hiked through last
year we stopped at his place (per the guide) without
knowing anything about him. (I don't know...I guess
we were expecting a visit similar to the Saufley's)
When we arrived (very thirsty and hot) we helped
ourselves to water from the hose on his lawn, since he
wasn't there. Suddenly Jack and his dog drove up, and
he gets out of the car and yells at us: "Who the hell
are you and what the hell are you doing in my yard"
(or something) leaving us kind of speechless (and
worried). Then he came over and told us he was joking
(well, he didn't put it quite like that, exactly) and
we spent the afternoon listening to his stories,
reading his signs and PED even fixed his fridge. He
was a nice old man, and probably lonely. PED and I
figured us thru-hikers probably added a lot to his
life...and he probably really looked forward to hiking
season and all the hikers stopping by. And the few
dollars we gave him for rides and showers, etc.
probably really made a difference to him. I think we
all made him feel like he was an importatant
individual that mattered, instead of some forgotten
senior citizen just waiting to die. Does anyone know
if he has family? I wonder who will take care of his
best friend (his dog) now. He is definitely one of
the many trail experiences we'll never forget.
