[pct-l] Sierra Snow Report, Kennedy Meadow to Reds Meadow.
Brian called from Reds Meadow this morning. Here's the snow report:
Snow is a problem above 10,000 feet generally, with a lot of post-holing in
sheltered areas and on north-facing slopes down to 9,200 feet or so. On
south-facing slopes, the trail is pretty clear to 11,000 feet. Above 11,000,
snow is firm enough to walk on with little trouble, except on steep slopes.
There are no major sun-cups, and very few mosquitoes yet! (The mosquito
situation can change even faster than the snow conditions.) Snow is
generally manageable, and melting fast in the warm weather. Take the ice axe
to use on Forester, Glen and Mather.
Evolution and Bear Creeks are waist-deep and running fast. Ford with caution.
Here are specific snow notes from Brian's trail log:
Golden Trout Wilderness - Patchy snow above 10,000 feet, especially on north
faces.
Forester Pass - Steep, flat sheet of icy snow with no footprints in it at
the Forester avalanch chute. North of the pass, post-holed for miles down
Bubb's Creek.
Glen Pass - Pick your own route through deep snow up to the pass. Snow on
the trail passing Rae Lakes. Clear at Woods Creek.
Muir Pass - More post-holing.
NOTE FOR THOSE PLANNING TO PICK UP RESUPPLY PACKAGES AT REDS MEADOW: The
store and all facilities are closed. According to someone at the pack
station, facilities will open on June 8th.
