[pct-l] The motel in Mojave

Donna already responded with the location information of White’s Motel in
Mojave, but I just wanted to add a couple of notes.

My husband, Scott, and I stayed there last year when we came through on our
hike. The Whites are nice people. They picked us up within 15 minutes of
calling them and will drive you to the trail as early as 6 am. The motel is
very clean and fairly cheap-can't remember how much, (possibly $40 dollars)
and has a pool. Roger White is very friendly and a fountain of information
about quite a few subjects.

The post office is two blocks from the motel. The postmaster really likes
hikers. He swallowed a tremendous insult, and maybe went against postal
guidelines, by accepting a package that had been, of all things, Fed-Exed to
the P.O. by someone. It contained something we desperately needed, so we
were very grateful. (Fed-Ex--when you don’t trust the U.S.P.S. to deliver
your mail even to itself.)

There is no Laundromat in town. We didn’t ask the Whites about using their
facilities, so I don’t know if they do that. One other thing. (This is
minutiae, but I wanted to say it anyway) I really like dogs (don’t tell my
cat) and Roger has a very well mannered standard poodle, but, from what I
gathered, she’s a bit of an airhead. “Nothing like her mother,” lamented
Roger. She was an inattentive mother and basically spends all day sitting in
a throne-like chair in front of a picture window in the main lobby, staring
out at traffic and looks to be thinking, “I just know I could be a different
poodle if I could only get out of Mojave.” If you’re ever in the area, it
is worth making her acquaintance, just to see that forlorn expression.

Well, I’ve never been to Tehachapi and can’t list its comparative wonders,
but if my glowing description, poodle and all, doesn’t make you want to stay
in Mojave, I just don’t know what will.
