My favorite story about dogs on the trail was one I read about Bill Irwin
and his seeing eye dog on the AT. About three days after starting, when
they were both getting used to the trail and still sore from the previous
days hiking, Bill arose in the morning and asked Orient if he wanted to "go
for a walk".... and the dog hid on him...
