How safe it is to hitch hike to town stops?

If you're doing a traditional thru-hike, hitch hiking isn't probably going
to be that much of a problem. Assuming that you are traveling with a group
of others. Many people band together for sections anywhere from a few day to
months. 

Section or solo hikers generally have a greater potential for problems.
Even then it's probably not all that great. Your chances of get killed or
injured while waiting for a ride or hiking along a highway is greater than
getting hurt from some deranged driver.
