When I was ridgerunner at a state park near my home, I met a man who hikes 
with just about all of that stuff.  He carries a cell phone and a two way 
radio for back-up.  He must have four flashlights, and sometimes carries one 
that is more of a beacon than a light.  He has a snakekit and bear mace, a 
huge length of heavy rope (don't ask me why), a GPS (although the trail is 
relatively short and well marked), and since he has sugar he has a testing 
kit (that's probably the most important thing he carries!)  Gail
