[pct-l] bivy
Hi Mary - a bivy sack is short for bivouac shelter. They are used where
tents can't be because of space limitations or are unnecessary such as the
bugless rainless desert. Of course ultralite backpackers use tarps instead, a
very viable alternative especially in the desert. Tarp use in cold rainy
places are subject to debate as most on this list already know. No need to
rehash here. Also, bivys are used for emergency shelter on climbs or extended
off trail day hikes where the possibility of being caught by darkness exists
and you then have to spend an unplanned cold night in the woods
