My parents were dead set against my hike when I announced that I was planning
it. At 20 years old, my parents had not yet let go and still thought of me
as a child. It wasn't until they realized that I was going to do this with
our without their help that they turned around and supported me while
respectfully disagreeing with the idea. As it became clear that I would in
fact succeed, they came full circle with respect and awe in what I had
accomplished.

For those in a similar situation, tell them that a 1977'er says it was the
best thing that could have happened to him, even looking at it from 2001.
This guy is gainfully employed, a father of five and married to the same
woman for 22 years. I attribute most of this to the priorities that I was
able to clearly identify on that long trek. Oh, and his parents were against
it for similar reasons back in 1976.

Just one of the meriad of benefits of a PCT hike on a life.
