We hike the JMT last August with a bear canister and did not have any 
problems with bear.  We did see the remains of a URSACK. They are smart. It 
seems like they didn't even want to bother anyone with a bear canister; they 
headed straight for the people without canisters, just 50 feet from us. Two 
times, near Donohue Pass and Rush Creek.
