Their books of crossing the Olympic's in the late 1800's are spell binding!!
The Press party tried to cross in the winter and barely came through alive
only to almost drown on a home made log raft a few miles from their trips
finish. Some of their " three axe chopped blazes" can still be found along
the Elwa river. The Olympic Mountains were the last wild Mts. to be explored
in the "lower 48". Before 1890's, few people had ever been to these hills and
no maps were made. West side has great rainforest!!! ( double walls tents
with rainflies are a must)( special note: Olympic Mountains contain no rock,
just very hard moss formations- - - Slug capital of the World- - 12 inch
Banana Slugs- - Ya!!!!)
