On the subject of books that long distance hikers might enjoy, I highly
recommend "The Long Walk" by Slavomir Rawicz. It's about a WWII Polish
cavalry officer who is captured by the Russians, his trial, his sentence to
Siberia, and his escape by foot across Siberia, the Gobi desert, Tibet,
Nepal, and the Himalayas to India.
Not quite like the regularly recommended books but an amazing (and true)
story that really puts a long-distance hike in perspective.
