Actually, the running shoes did fine for that section.  I think it's mostly
a matter of personal taste and hiking style.  For example, I was a lot more
agile with the light pack that I would have been with my old 50 pound load.
Since I was carrying less weight, I didn't mind having to position my feet
carefully.  I also never felt that my ankles were at risk.  I think that
running shoes with a heavy load might have been a different story.

I'm a firm believer in finding footwear that works for me and then going
with it.
