I agree that the average thru hiker probably needs 5,000 calories per day,
but how many people actually carry that amount?  I would be willing to bet
that the average is more around 3,500 to 4,000 but I could be wrong.  Every
thru hiker loses weight and muscle mass, but it is the glorious town stop
where everybody refuels with a glutinous attack on some long awaited
surprise.  I do not know if a "raw food" diet excludes feasting on a town
stop, but I do not think the calories eaten on the trail are that deficient
as to bounce somebody off as long as they are eating well in town.  I prefer
a nice warm cooked meal while on my hike, but good luck.
