RE: [pct-l] Weekend

Gail-
Griz are another matter entirely. Your risk is low but Griz DO sometimes
attack humans. Black Bear rarely do. People who are hurt are usually
defending their food with their person and get hurt inadvertently.

The modern Sierra human habituated [urselus garbagus] bear really only
inhabits about 500 miles of the 2700 mile PCT. In other areas the bears are
timid and easily scared off if they are even around. Even in that 500 mile
corridor, you can count on counterbalancing to work except:
1. Along the PCT between Forrester and Woods Creek. However, this area has
bear boxs that solve the problem
2. The Lakes north of Mammoth and South of Donahue Pass. The worst are is
1000 Island Lake. However, it is relatively trivial to simply walk north
past Rush Creek and camp at altitude below Donahue.
3. Lyell Canyon. This is the Canyon North of Donahue and South of Tolumne
Meadows. It is only 30 odd miles from Mammoth to Tolumne. Leaving Mammoth,
if you make a stop simply eat all your food, then have a big lunch at
Tolumne Meadows. No Problem
4. The 10 miles north of Tolumne to the High Sierra Camp. Again no problem.
Either stop at the camp and use the bear box or hike another 5 miles north.
