I wanted to thank everyone for the replies.  It sounds like I have nothing to 
fear after all.   I am a ridgerunner at the state park near my home and there 
has been lots of bear activity this summer.  That never bothered me.  I guess 
I'm not really afraid of "eastern" bears, only "western" ones.  LOL  But it 
sounds like there's not much difference really.  Gail
