Largest U.S. forest won't be developed
WASHINGTON -- The Clinton administration yesterday added Alaska's Tongass
National Forest -- the nation's largest -- to its list of pristine
woodlands to be sealed from development.
In all, about 58.5 million acres of forests nationwide would be protected
from logging, road-building and other types of development. The amount of
land protected under the so-called "roadless policy" is larger than the
state of Washington.
