Generally the plans have gone as follows in the previous two ADZPCTKO's (I
have inserted the 2001 dates that we are planning on):
Friday, April 27th:
Arrival of organizers, ferrying of hikers to the border, set up camp sites at
Lake Morena,
Saturday, April 28th
Ferrying of hikers to border in the morning, pick up hikers from Hauser Cnyn
in the late afternoon, main event and dinner, tent and equipment comparisons,
oldtimers stories around the campfire.
Sunday, April 29th
Breakfast (if you don't get up and out at the crack) relaxation, break camp
and organizers sadly head home wishing they were going with the hikers.
If you would like to help, I am generally trying to coordinate things this
year, however, Charlie Jones and Bob Reiss live in the San Diego area and
have alot more on the ball usually. Bob starts ferrying people to Campo way
before (as in weeks) the ADZ and so gets a feel for logistics, number of
people we are likely to expect, costs, weather, etc. Charlie, Jim and Anne
help out with the water stashing and the ADZ. Paul and Pat from the Hikers
Oasis also help out a lot. Tom Reynolds has been instrumental in the
organization and funding of the first two ADZs and is wimping out this year
to try his hand at a section or two hike. So, you see it is by committee
that this thing is organized and it sort of comes together mostly through
email. I will add your email address to the "Supporters" list so you will be
included in the communications and can contribute your opinion, time, efforts
and perhaps funds. WELCOME, one and all!
Water stashing on the southern section is usually coordinated in concert with
the ADZPCTKO also. It may change this year though. There was a concern last
year that the water was used up early even though it probably wasn't
necessary. Restocking is a logistical issue and so we tossed around the idea
last year of stashing the water later when it is needed and restocking as
required thereafter.
On a side note; two years ago we stashed water at two sites in large
Rubbermaid tubs to protect the two liter bottles and I attached a note inside
to call me (from Warner Springs) if you came along and found the stash empty
so that it could be restocked. We removed the tubs last year and changed one
site and stashed refillable gallon jugs with no note other than "For
PCT'ers". About two weeks ago I received a voice mail recording from someone
with a very heavy English or Irish accent saying, "there wasn't any water
there and your note said to let you know"!!!!! I can only imagine that one
of the notes blew away and he found it, or, someone from the past is playing
a joke on me.
Best regards,
Greg "Strider" Hummel
