In my opinion, there are two issues to consider for this section;
starting late enough to avoid snow in the San Jacinto area, and starting
early enough to avoid hellish temperatures in the Mohave.  Since you're
starting in the spring, I would suggest leaving the border with the
thru-hiker crowd in mid/late april, and attending the kick-off party at
Lake Morena.
