[pct-l] equipment costs

i keep reading about 500 dollar packs,300 dollar tents and sleeping bags in
the hundreds range,then i read the website that the `typical` hiker carries
from 1500 to 3000 dollars worth of equipment. this sounds totally
unrealistic,compared to all my thruhiking gear which runs about 30 bucks
tops, and weighs out around 25 pounds. what are the real numbers?, i can`t
belive most people can afford 3000 worth of hiking gear. rob
