Just got back from a little hike of a bit of
the PCT, and I thought everyone would be sooo
interested...;)
On the way to Chelan I picked up a couple
hikers at Skykomish - weathercarrot & a woman (shoot,I'm so bad about remembering names...). They
said they had about 4 inches of new snow at Pieper
Pass (south of Stevens Pass) a couple days
earlier & there were a bunch of hikers holed-up
in Skykomish.
The cheap (slow) boat from Chelan to Stehekin is
$23 round-trip - not a bad deal... but it costs
$25 to park a car at the dock for a week.
There are a couple faster, more expensive boats
in case you're interested.
I had originally intended to hike all the way to Stevens Pass, but didn't feel like finagaling a ride back
to Chelan, so I hiked out to Holden instead & took
the boat back. (did a bunch of side hikes for
about 55 miles total).
Anyway, I met one thru-hiker named Jeff, who said
he was wading through waist-deep fresh snow drifts
at red pass. He looked pretty wasted and trail-
weary. He seemed to think that most other hikers
waited in Skykomish for the recent storm to pass.
I met another woman (name escapes me again, but
many will probably know her by the description)
who was packing with a horse. She had a lot of
stories to tell - horse logistics are not trivial.
She seemed to be doing well though, she waited
out the storm in Darrington (I think).
The weather cleared up, the last couple
days were amazing - warm & clear. Hopefully the
real nasty stuff will hold out for a couple more
weeks!

-Jonathan
