[pct-l] Bears in the high Sierras - protecting food

Next week I will be backpacking to the summit of Mt. Whitney. Although I have backpacked before, this will be my first time in bear country. I know that bears have a keen sense of smell, and thus anything remotely fragrant has to be stored appropriately. My question is though is it necessary to hang food that is in its original packaging and thus hasn’t been opened yet? Thank you for your input and also any suggestions on keeping food away from bears are welcome.
